Post-Intensive Care Syndrome

As you move out of intensive care, you may not have the same physical, mental or emotional abilities as before. You may need more time to recover and to work on regaining these functions.

This is referred to as post-intensive care syndrome, and some common triggers you might see are:

  • An ICU-stay longer than three to five days
  • An infection or sepsis that needs specialized daily care
  • Multiple affected organs like lungs, kidney, skin, heart, brain, intestines or others
  • Mechanical ventilation needs
  • Stable lab results but significant functional disability compared to pre-illness
  • Weakness from degenerated nerves and muscle
  • Poor use of nutrients even with normal calorie and protein intake
  • Deficits in attention, memory and reasoning
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms with frightening memories or hallucinations

Under our care, you receive targeted services including:

  • ICU-level care and staffing when necessary
  • 24/7 respiratory therapy coverage
  • IV pain control management and narcotic/opioid weaning
  • Special care for ventilation and breathing
  • Antimicrobial management to complete sepsis treatment and prevent infection and antibiotic resistance
  • An interdisciplinary team to explain your care and monitor your progress
  • A goal-directed care plan centered on your needs and abilities
  • Family-focused discharge planning, whether directly to home or the next level of care

Our coordinated, specialized care is designed to meet your specific medical needs. We are committed to helping you on your road to regaining independence.
